Beer - More Things You Can Learn
In a previous article we started a discussion of some of the things you can learn about beer. We covered some of the basics. But beer goes way beyond basics. Maybe that's why over 100,000 people each month do Internet search engine lookups on beer. Ready for some more things you can learn about beer? Great! Let's begin! Everybody talks about ABV or alcohol by volume. Every beer drinker should know his ABV or he's going to be in a lot of trouble if he wants to keep from getting too sloshed out of his mind. ABV simply means what portion of the total amount of liquid in the bottle of beer is alcohol. Why is this important? Very simple. The more alcohol by volume, the more actual...

Belgium And Beer: Made For Each Other
In addition to some wonderful history, the country of Belgium is "The Beer country". Bordering France, Luxembourg, Germany and The Netherlands, Belgium is in the heart of Europe. This technologically advanced member of NATO and the EU is truly a beer-lovers haven. So much so, in fact, that the Belgian Brewer's Guild boasts that a beer lover could easily enjoy a different beer every day and not have to duplicate his selection for over a year. How's that for choices, beer lovers? In a practice that dates back a long time, some of Belgium's more famous breweries are actually brewed in monasteries. These are called trappiste breweries and are brewed by members of the monastic order. There...

Brewing Beer
Beer drinkers see a pint of beer as a magical golden brew. Many have said that it's surely the Nectar of the Gods. In reality, most beers are based on a basic four-ingredient recipe, and undergo a simple brewing process before bringing joy to the parched bar patrons of the world. Beer is created using a basic mixture of water, hops, malted barley and yeast. Depending on the type of beer being brewed, taste enhancements such as flavourings and sugar will be added. Starches are also incorporated into the beer so that sugars will easily ferment during the brewing process. The fermented sugars add body and flavour, while increasing the alcohol content. Water Beer is mainly composed of water,...

Pairing Beer With Food

Author: Norman Adams Lariviere

Pairing beer with the fine cuisine has recently come to the attention of many eating establishments as they try to cater to the 90's micro-brew crowd. No longer is wine considered the only drink fit for a succulent entree. You too can bring this art form into your own home with a few simple tips.

Much like wine, you must consider the style of cuisine and the predominant flavors in a dish. Here are a few examples to get you started:

  • Deep savory flavors, such as a dry-rubbed steak, can be balanced by a sweeter beer, such as a German Dopple-bock or cream stout. For the opposite effect, some like a dry Irish stouts here as well, but I would recommend a porter to avoid strong bitter flavors.
  • Barbeque chicken, especially tomato based sauces, can be complemented by Hefe-weizen (wheat beer) where the citrus flavors show through.
  • For more subtle fish or pork dishes, a nice Czech style pilsner, with crisp, hoppy notes will spice up the palate between bites.
  • The yeasty belgian beers can have a bread-like flavor, which work well with fruit and cheese.

Keep in mind that hops can often make a beer extremely bitter. Bitter flavors hit a very specific part of the toungue and can linger in your throat.

Knowing your beer before pairing it with any recipe is half of the fun. Purchase several varieties and try them all! Better yet, you could brew your own beer exactly how you would like it... but that is for another article.

Norman Adams Lariviere, Brew Chef, has been creating gourmet cuisine for over 12 years, incorporating over 25 batches of his home-brewed beers into every recipe. He has recently launched a website Brew and Chew to share his recipes and pass on his home-brewing experiences.

How to Begin Wine Collecting
Some people collect wine for money...and some people collect wine because they have a passion for wine. Irregardless of whether you're collecting wine for profit or for pleasure, collecting wine requires some investment. Enjoying wine is a completely different thing from collecting wine, bear this in mind. When it comes to collecting wine, one of the most important thing to consider is where you're going to keep the wine. A substantial portion of your investment towards your wine collection hobby is in ensuring that there's a suitable place to store your wine. The motive is to ensure that the wine collection will increase in value, not decrease. Believe it or not, the storage and the way the wine is kept make a world of difference. Wine that is kept, collected and protected in suitable condition will age nicely and will turn into vintage wines. However, if your wine collection is not properly cared for, well, you'll know. The quality of the wine collection will deteriorate and a wine expert will be able to tell that your wine has been ill-treated. First of all, do extensive research on the many different types of wines there are in the market. Some wines are meant to be kept and stored over a long period of time, some are not. Books on wine collection should be bought and if you're at all serious about wine collection, spend some time reading through them and understand the different types of wines and the way that they should be kept. If keeping and reading books on wine is not your 'glass of wine', you can do your research on the internet. Either way, there's a wealth of information on wine that you can find. Explore, absorb and remember. Once you understand the way each type of wine should be kept, it's time for you to design and construct the place...
